Undoubtedly, one of the places you must visit on the island of Rhodes is none other than the Acropolis. Thanks to its strategic location, you can see it from anywhere in the village. To visit it, all you have to do is enter the village and follow the signs along the route. You can also choose to go on the back of one of the donkeys that are located at the entrance of the village. Whatever your choice, the journey will not take you more than 10 minutes.
The Golden Age of Lindos was between the 6th and 7th centuries BC. During this period, the village played a key role in the Greek colonization movement. It also served as one of the most important trading centers of that time.
Upon entering the archaeological site of the Acropolis, you will see the relief representation of a ship carved into the rock and dating back to 180 BC. The grand staircase will lead you to the administrative buildings of the Knights. and then, you will reach an open space.On the first level is the Byzantine church of Agios Ioannis, built in the 13th or 14th century on the ruins of an older church. Here you will also find the remains of a temple that probably dates back to the Roman period.Then you will come across the impressive staircase that leads to the Propylaea and the huge Hellenistic Stoa. After climbing the staircase you will have the opportunity to enjoy the impressive view that the spot offers. You will be enchanted by the white houses of the village as well as the panoramic view of Agios Pavlos beach.
At the top of the Acropolis is the Temple of Athena, also built on the ruins of an older temple. The imposing temple sits at the top of the stairs along with other buildings added during Roman and Hellenistic times. In the 14th century AD, the Knights of St. John rebuilt the fortress to keep the islands protected from the Ottomans.
TIP: It is better to plan your visit as early as possible in the morning hours. As the time approaches noon the temperature, especially during the months of July and August, rises a lot. Make sure you have water with you, and sun protection.
